Abstract:
Fred Grover Jr. MD will discuss the ongoing research showing potential benefits of psychedelics in preventing or reversing Alzheimer’s disease, improving neuroplasticity, treating autistic spectrum disorder, anxiety, depression and PTSD. Benefits towards spiritual awakening, improved connection to nature, empathy, and even improved sexual intimacy will also be discussed. Psychedelic research has shown that various plant medicine and modern molecules can stimulate BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) Compounds like psilocybin, LSD, and DMT, are known to enhance the activity of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays a crucial role in brain plasticity, learning, and memory. The mechanism involves multiple pathways, including: Activation of 5-HT2A Receptors, increased neuroplasticity, modulation of glutamate, and enhanced mTOR Pathway Activity. In summary, psychedelics enhance BDNF activity by activating serotonin receptors, modulating glutamate levels, and stimulating neuroplasticity-related pathways, contributing to long-term positive changes in brain function. These changes are thought to underpin their therapeutic potential for conditions like depression, PTSD, anxiety, enhanced memory and improved brain health.
